Export of education

The story of EduCluster Finland, known as the forerunner of exporting education, started when the University of Jyväskylä, Jyväskylä University of Applied Sciences JAMK and the Jyväskylä Educational Consortium Gradia came together to promote the reputation of successful Finnish education abroad. This gave birth to EduCluster Finland (ECF), a competence cluster of exporting education.

The centre of educational experts in Jyväskylä has grown into a trailblazer of exporting education with global operations. Some key success factors from the very start have been strong background support, innovativeness, solid experts and specialists of their fields and partners that are open to change.

There is plenty of global demand for education focusing on teaching skills, and ECF is now operating across the world. It has projects, ventures and partners in more than 200 countries, and its extensive network of experts comprises specialists across the entire field of education.

The strong teacher training competence of the University of Jyväskylä and the multidisciplinary research work have played central roles in the staff training of international educational institutes. The number of training courses and events provided in Asia, especially in China, has been rising for the entirety of ECF’s life cycle.

The first Finnish export of vocational education was implemented with Gradia in 2018, when the instructors of Qatar-Finland International School completed the vocational degree of special needs teaching assistant. The pedagogical qualification training for the international teachers of the Qatar school was started together with the Jyväskylä University of Applied Sciences in 2019.

Another important milestone was reached in 2014, when the state of Qatar invited ECF to manage their Finnish school in their capital city, Doha. Qatar-Finland International School started its operations as a school of just 100 pupils in the two first grades of comprehensive school, but during its six years in operation, the school has grown into one of the area’s most highly valued schools for pupils under the age of twelve, serving both local and international families.
